COMIC DISCOVERY CENTRE

A Learning Centre for Youth

Text based learning has lost momentum in being an affective learning mode. Literacy rate of 94.7% is below the rate in developed countries. 6% (over a million) of Malaysian at age 15+ still illiterate. This is due to poor reading habits among Malaysians especially youth. Learners are more attracted to image based reading, shorter text to quickly comprehend the subject. There is a need for a center to motivate learning & reading among youth, through image based.

While a good number of youths do get ecstatic and engaged in reading, some are reluctant and disinterested. Reading reluctance is fairly common in youths, especially beyond classroom doors. In 1997, Ambigapathy Pandian published the ground-breaking book ‘Reading in Malaysia’. The book imparts a comprehensive study of reading reluctance, a phenomenon of people who can read but refuse to do so.

Many traditional books assigned school textbooks fail to capture the interest of today’s youths because they are used to fast paced movies, video games and our flourishing social media apps. Youths become disengaged from reading because they lose interest in the content of the texts they are reading.
